The Monster Drillship Chikyū that Can Drill to a Record Depth of 7,000 Meters
Chikyū is one of the most well-known drillships in the world. Apart from her unmatched capability of drilling holes as deep as 7,000 meters down the seafloor, she is also unmatched in the distinctive equipments including a riser equipment that no other ocean-going vessel before her was equipped with.
With the ability to drill four miles below the seafloor, she is anywhere between two and four times more capable than the existing drillships of today. She was laid down in 2001 and launched a year later. A scientific drillship, she was built specifically for the global Integrated Ocean Drilling Program and drills deep into the seabed to uncover secrets about earthquakes, seismic changes, origin of life and more.
