Constructed in 1976 by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, the Bellamya was a supertanker that served its purpose as an oil ship for the French Shell Oil unit. The Bellamya was the second supertanker to come under the Batillus class. During its time, the Bellamya was one of the largest supertankers in the world, a title which was also shared by sister models such as the Prairial, the Batillus, and the Pierre Guillaumat. The only ship that was larger than all these models was the Seawise Giant. However, in terms of gross tonnage, the Bellamya was considered to be much larger than any other ship at that time.
