The supertanker, Batillus belonged to the prestigious Batillus class. It was also the first supertanker to be built as part of the Batillus class. Constructed in 1976 by the renowed Chantiers de l’Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, the supertanker served the French Unit of Shell Oil. Like its sister models the Prairial, the Pierre Guillaumat and the Bellamya, the Batillus reigned the seas as one of the largest supertankers in the world, during that period. Though the Seawise Giant was considered to be much larger than all the four Batillus class supertankers, the Batillus and its sister ships were recognized for their higher gross tonnage.
